i don't know of any 'substitute' for amphetamines.
the doctor could have given him something to serene him down, a sedative, to some extent than an actual substitute.

when/if you are going to court, your solicitor can petition the court to get your husband to make available the court, and even your solicitor and yourself, evidence from his doctor, if you can't find out. or just to reassure you even.
